Minority Leader, Hon. Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has alleged that he was assaulted by a police officer during the #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo held outside Parliament House.
In an official statement released to the media, the Member of Parliament detailed a shocking encounter with a uniformed officer identified as Constable Forson.
“As I approached the barricade, without any provocation, a uniformed police officer stationed behind the barricade – Constable Forson, a tall, fair, heavily built officer – deliberately struck the left side of my chest with the full force of his right palm, directly near my heart. The impact of the hit dazed me and I was visibly shaken and short of breath.”
Afenyo-Markin described the incident as unprofessional, disgraceful, and a dangerous abuse of power, especially considering his status as a sitting MP and the peaceful nature of the protest.
The #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo was organized to demand reforms and greater accountability within the judiciary. The event drew civil society groups, opposition voices, and concerned citizens advocating for transparency and judicial independence.
Afenyo-Markin has called for a full investigation and disciplinary action against the officer involved. He revealed that a formal complaint will be submitted to the Inspector General of Police.
“This unprovoked, disrespectful, and shameful attack is a stain on the professionalism of the Ghana Police Service. It was witnessed by several senior police officers who failed to intervene,” he added.
Civil society groups and parliamentary colleagues have expressed concern over the alleged incident and have joined calls for accountability.
This development adds further tension to the growing debate over the role of law enforcement in democratic expression and the protection of public officials during protests.
