A glimmer of hope has emerged in a tragic incident that shook the Bantama community in the Ashanti Region. A second-year student of Adventist Senior High School, who was shot in the eye under distressing circumstances, is now set to receive life-saving medical treatment abroad, thanks to the intervention of Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

The young student’s ordeal captured national attention after it was revealed that he had sustained severe injuries to his right eye, leaving his vision impaired and his future uncertain. The incident, which sparked concern among students, parents, and educators alike, led to widespread calls for support to ensure the victim could access proper healthcare.

Responding to the call, North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stepped in to offer assistance. Known for his active engagement in social intervention programs, the MP facilitated the necessary processes for the student to receive specialized care overseas. He also covered the travel and medical expenses, ensuring that the boy and his guardian could make the journey without financial burden.

In a statement shared on social media, Mr. Ablakwa expressed his deep concern over the incident and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the youth in times of crisis. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure no child suffers alone, especially when their life and future hang in the balance,” he said. “I’m relieved we’ve been able to get him the urgent help he needs.”

The news has been met with gratitude and relief from the student’s family, school authorities, and community leaders, who praised the MP’s timely intervention. Schoolmates also held a prayer and send-off gathering, hoping for a successful surgery and speedy recovery.

This development also raises renewed concerns about student safety and the urgent need to address gun violence in and around school communities. Stakeholders in the education sector have called for increased security measures and psychological support for students affected by violence.

As the young student prepares to travel abroad for treatment, many Ghanaians are reminded of the importance of compassion, leadership, and the power of community in times of adversity.
